Just as in the case of speakers—which are part of my passion for audio reproduction systems— the saying "no replacement for displacement" holds true, so does "no replacement for tradition" apply to wine. Consumers, professionals, and producers may not share this perspective. Consumers ofter lack the cultural understanding needed to appreciate the deep essence of wine, while producers recognise that, regardless of their financial resources, they cannot purchase time, which is the cornerstone of tradition.
The above thoughts immediately come to mind when one pours a glass of one of the country`s most iconic white wines, created by the unforgettable Konstantinos Antonopoulos. Over its 30-year (and counting!) history, some aspects have changed, but the unique freshness and unparalleled balance of flavours remain, captivating every wine enthusiast who savours it.
The word Orini has recently been added to the distinguished name to highlight the origin of the grapes from mountain vineyards (800-900 meters) of Achaia. The current blend consists of 65% Lghorthi, 25% Roditi and 10% Chardonnay.
The cool-climate freshness is immediately apparent, evident in the vibrant green highlights that complement the pale yellow colour, as well as the intensity of aromas of wild herbs, pear, green apple, and lime zest.
On the palate, the wine reveals a medium body that harmoniously carries through the nose. Its roundness is expertly balanced by a remarkable acidity, leaving a pleasing finish, with subtle hints of mint that enhance the overall tasting experience.
Lagorthi and Roditis are best enjoyed in small glasses, while Chardonnay suits larger ones; thus, the moderate-sized Stolzle Exquisit White 42cl glass is an ideal choice, providing harmony, vibrancy, and length on the palate. The wine is best served at 9-11ºC, enhancing these qualities. Pairing it with delicate fish (cod, sea bass), cheese pies, broad beans drizzled with oil, or pasta with seafood guarantees exquisite combinations.
For wine lovers who have shifted from "been there" to "tried that" the search for treasure (often of fleeting brilliance) continues amidst the myriad options in the wine market. However, those who appreciate stability, tradition and history will find in "Adoli Gis", translating to "Innocent land", one of the foremost representations of fine domestic white wines, even if the price of €16.40 isn’t entirely ... "innocent"!
