The Florina-based project excels with Xinomavro and its various expressions. Given this expertise, does Noema`s exploration of other varieties make sense? RATING: 6.5 / 10.
  • NOEMA WINERY, SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023 | Wine Reviews

Only four years old, the venture of American investor David Widdig is already demonstrating exceptional progress. Although Noema is essentially a virtual winery—meaning it doesn’t have its own facilities or vineyards—its team`s collaboration with local winegrowers and wineries have been impressive. Based in Xino Nero, Florina, Noema focuses primarily on Xinomavro, mastering its diverse expressions in white, rosé and red, all of which have won me over and earned high ratings (through their own efforts) in the FNL Guide.

Beyond Xinomavro, Noema has also began exploring other varieties that thrive in the region. One such endeavour is the Sauvignon Blanc cuvée, limited to 1,000 bottles. Although I have not found any additional details, I assume this inaugural white has not been aged in barrels but in stainless steel tanks, as indicated by its pale yellow colour, which has lost much of its initial green highlights.

If we were to make comparisons, this Sauvignon would probably lean towards the Bordeaux side, with cat`s pee dominating the aroma, complemented by notes of sweet lemon, peach, and hints of grapefruit juice.

The wine benefits from the region`s cold climate, providing ample acidity. However, its flavour lacks intensity and vibrancy, echoing the nose`s subdued impressions.

Serving it in a Stolzle Quatrophil White glass at  9-11°C will accentuate its freshness. At the same time, the wine`s fairly light body makes it an ideal choice for dishes such as artichokes with grapefruit, fried calamari, cheese pies, and light salads without sweet dressings.

Undoubtedly, this Sauvignon Blanc does not yet match the high standards to which Noema Winery has accustomed us. Its flavour length falls short compared to its peers, and it lacks the freshness one might expect from this variety and terroir. However, I am confident hat a producer who has managed to successfully tame the challenging Xinomavro can achieve similar success elsewhere. It`s likely that Noema will soon refine its approach to Sauvignon Blanc.
