While the wine scene in Drama may be seen as a teaser, the reality remains that this remarkable wine-producing region has historically struggled with its relationship with sweet wines. Its dessert cuvées were few and far between, and their time in circulation was relatively short. However, in recent years, Drama`s top wineries have begun to venture into the world of residual sugars, choosing different paths toward sweet paradise.
Ktima Techni Oinou has opted for the popular path of sun-drying and barrel aging, but with an unconventional twist in its choice of grape varieties. Thus, the esteemed winery from Mikrochori has opted for a unique blend of Malagouzia and Assyrtiko for its inaugural sweet offering.
Upon poured, Finale presents a beautiful, clear amber colour with high aromatic intensity and concentration—characteristics common in any wine made from dehydrated grapes. However, the addition of Malagouzia adds a special note to the wine, as it complements the bouquet of caramel, mi suit apricot, dried fig, and walnut with fresher notes that evoke the essence of sweet spoon grapes.
This lends Finale a profile closely that closely resembles the Muscat from Samos, yet in a more concentrated expression. This impression is further enhanced with the first sip, as the palate finds itself balanced—neither overly sweet nor sharply acidic. These qualities contribute to a softness reminiscent of the signature wines from the eastern Aegean island.
For an intense flavour experience, consider using a small tulip glass, such as the Stolzle Exquisit White 35cl, which is ideal for sweet wines and should be served at a cool temperature of 7-9°C. While its tempting to enjoy Finale on its own, this wine pairs beautifully with a range of delightful dishes, including apple strudel, rum baba with caramelised apricots, and a gorgonzola soufflé!
The first sweet attempt of the Art of Wine estate successfully captures the benefits of sun-drying without the drawbacks. While some—including myself—might wish for an additional freshness and extended flavour length that a higher acidity could provide, I am confident that the producer from Drama will have no trouble fine-tuning this particular cuvée. He has numerous options—from adjusting the proportion of varieties to reducing the sun-drying days or harvesting earlier—allowing him to transform this beautiful Finale into an impressive Grande Finale!
