Leaving behind the bustling tourist hub of Zakynthos, the road to Koiliomenos — a mountainous village in central Zakynthos, 16 kilometres from the town — leads to Ambelostrates, a distinctive and rustic taverna. Its tables are spread out in a small clearing within a forest. The centuries-old, stone-built building housing the restaurant is part of the Maroudas family’s home, vineyards, and farm. Host and chef Antonis Maroudas embodies the farm-to-table philosophy with effortless authenticity—because here, it’s simply natural. Combining their own produce with local island products (mainly cheeses and cured meats), he presents a variety of Zakynthian dishes such as wild herb-stuffed “tsigaridopites,” birds’ gizzards with ladotyri cheese baked in the oven, or beef stew. His son, Alekos Maroudas, recommends pairing the meal with wines from the island’s wineries, particularly those produced by their own vineyard.

Chef Kristy crafts delicious and inventive dishes, most of which tell a story, such as "Clean Monday" (a nod to the typical dishes on this day), Polpeta (featuring beef fillet, rösti potatoes, sour cream, and tomato gel), or the “Seafood Mageiritsa" (sautéed sea bass wrapped with suet, greek lettuce, shells, and artichoke lemon sauce).
