Stepping through the door, the first impression is one of immediate familiarity. The vintage aesthetic evokes an old Athenian home, with the wooden bar and patterned tiles creating a warm, lived-in atmosphere. Behind the project is an intriguing trio: experienced bartender Eva Fragkou, known from Hams & Clams and Noah, alongside Anargyros, a pilot, and Pavlos, a barber. A group of friends who decided to join forces, with Eva taking the lead on the food and beverage side and setting the tone for the space. The name of the bar, contrary to the common assumption that it references the nearby First Cemetery, is in fact a tribute to her favourite song by Haroula Alexiou.

The philosophy of Di’ Efchon can be distilled into a single idea: an emphasis on simplicity as the natural companion to quality. Behind the bar, the list focuses squarely on the essence of the classics. We tried a solid, well-judged Negroni, where a carefully balanced vermouth blend, led by Del Professore Vermouth di Torino, works in harmony with Bulldog Gin to deliver a composed, confident result. The Margarita was equally impressive, made with Espolón Blanco and fresh lime, clean and precise in its execution. A special mention is reserved for the Bloody Mary, served here in its classic form with Skyy Vodka, but elevated by a measured hand with spices and acidity, achieving depth without heaviness. The wine list follows the same philosophy of thoughtful restraint and sense of place, spotlighting lesser-known grape varieties from the Greek vineyard. It is a considered approach that feels entirely in tune with the character of the space and one I found particularly appealing.
However, Di’ Efchon does not stop at drinks alone. It also offers a carefully curated and genuinely satisfying bar food menu. Eva Fragkou has put together a selection of small plates rooted in personal references and the work of small, independent producers. The taramosalata bruschetta, made daily following her mother’s recipe, is addictive in its simplicity. The tomato carpaccio is a revelation: tomatoes sourced from a grower outside Gytheio, extra virgin olive oil from Ermioni produced by the family of co-owner Anargyros, a pinch of fleur de sel and oregano from Kythira. Tasting a tomato of such clarity and flavour in an Athenian bar feels almost surprising today. The pickles are handmade from seasonal vegetables, while dishes such as marinated anchovies with taramosalata sauce and mussels complete an experience that recalls the spirit of the old-school mezedopoleio, reimagined through the lens of a contemporary bar.

The atmosphere is perfectly rounded out by the music. With a carefully judged balance of roughly 80% Greek and 20% international tracks, the soundtrack draws exclusively from pre-2000 releases. From Marinella and Haris Alexiou to Xylina Spathia and Diana Ross, the selection creates a warm, feel-good soundscape that encourages conversation and relaxation, far removed from the pressure of mainstream hits.
In summary, Di’ Efchon is a genuinely compelling new addition to the Mets neighbourhood. It is a bar that respects its guests, treats them to honest flavours and well-made drinks, and allows them to unwind in an environment that feels truly familiar. And in today’s Athens, that sense of ease and authenticity may well be the greatest luxury of all.
