You might say it is subjective. After all, we do not all listen in the same way. That is true. And yet it is a pursuit that spans years, even decades, with hundreds of companies dedicated to chasing this ideal. Is there such a thing as perfect sound reproduction? It is a rhetorical question, of course, but the journey itself is endless and often filled with unexpected pleasures.
Do not assume that the world of high-end audio is a niche occupied by only a handful of enthusiasts. While, in economic and industrial terms, it may be described as a “cottage industry”, there are in fact hundreds of thousands of devoted individuals across the globe, regardless of financial means. They are known as audiophiles, and listening to them speak about their passion is invariably fascinating.
Is there anyone who truly loves music and is not interesting to listen to? Probably not. Because a genuine audiophile is, at heart, a music lover who uses equipment, loudspeakers and sound systems as a means to listen properly to music. Not to impress, but to connect more deeply with what is being played.
Of course, there are also those who raise an eyebrow whenever high-end audio is mentioned. In that case, it is usually best to move on. Quickly. Very quickly.

In this Story of Perfection, we turn our attention to one of the world’s leading loudspeaker manufacturers, Marten. A Swedish company that first presented its loudspeakers in 1998, Marten was founded by Leif Mårten Olofsson.
Music, craftsmanship and patience were quite literally written into his DNA. Leif’s grandfather, Leif Josef Olofsson, was a violin maker in the early 20th century, building instruments with Stradivarius as his point of reference. From him came both a reverence for music and a respect for the discipline of making beautiful objects by hand.
In the 1970s, Leif built his first loudspeakers in the garage of his family home. What began as a youthful hobby would eventually become his life’s work. While studying and later graduating as an electronics engineer, he developed numerous iterations of his designs, refining his understanding of acoustics, materials and crossover behaviour.
The decisive breakthrough came in the mid-1990s, when he encountered Accuton tweeters with their pure ceramic diaphragms for the first time. It was then that he realised he could create something genuinely different. The rigid ceramic cones produced a cleaner, more transparent sound, allowing listeners to hear more detail in recordings than ever before, accompanied by greater natural dynamics and remarkable speed.
There was, however, a problem. The Accuton tweeters were simply too fast compared to the far slower bass drivers available at the time. Leif’s solution came when he paired them with newly developed ceramic-cone bass units. The moment was a true “Eureka”.
This was the birth of the first Marten loudspeaker. A two-way, floor-standing design, featuring a single bass driver and a tweeter. Leif named it Mingus.

In 1998, the company Marten was formally established, originally under the name Marten Design. It is based on Sweden’s west coast, near Gothenburg, in the area of Mölndal. From the outset and to this day, Marten has remained a family-owned business, run by Leif Olofsson alongside his brothers, Jörgen and Lars Olofsson.
Following the Mingus, the next model to appear was a larger, floor-standing 2.5-way loudspeaker named Miles. This was followed by the Monk. Reviews in leading hi-fi publications were strikingly positive, quickly bringing Marten to the attention of the international audio community and helping the company establish a strong foothold in the high-end market.
Marten’s designs follow the tradition of Swedish functionalism. You will find no unnecessary ornamentation on a Marten loudspeaker. Every detail exists for a reason: to deliver an exceptional musical experience. Practicality is also a central part of the design philosophy. It has always been important to Marten that their loudspeakers can be enjoyed in a normal living space, rather than requiring a purpose-built listening room.
In the early 2000s, Marten began developing its first three-way design, a true reference model named Coltrane, which made its international debut in 2003. The Coltrane brought Marten worldwide recognition. It was followed in 2006 by the Coltrane Supreme, developed as a collaborative project with several specialist audio manufacturers. The Django XL came next, and the story has continued to unfold ever since.
Among the current and recent models are the Mingus Quintet 2, Parker Trio, Oscar Trio, the outstanding Coltrane Quintet, and, of course, the formidable Coltrane Supreme Extreme. Loudspeakers at the very top of the hierarchy.
And yet, no loudspeaker is ever truly perfect. Which is precisely why the Olofsson brothers continue their pursuit, refining, questioning and evolving their designs. A journey that shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

For almost three decades, Marten has been building loudspeakers for home music reproduction, using high-quality components and, in many cases, so-called “exotic” materials such as diamond and beryllium. The company’s aim is to close the gap between the live musical experience and listening at home, allowing the listener to reconnect with their most powerful musical moments.
At the heart of Marten’s philosophy lies an obsession with sound free from coloration and distortion. The goal is to allow audiophiles to experience music exactly as it was recorded, and to feel its full emotional impact. Marten loudspeakers are designed for demanding listeners. For those who want to hear the truth. For those who want music to provoke an involuntary physical response.
With aesthetics always at the forefront, appearance, tactility and presence are integral to the Marten identity. These are loudspeakers conceived not only as precision instruments, but as objects of lasting beauty and authority.
