And where is the souvlaki, our national street food? What happened? No matter how many steps have been taken in the right direction, we are still looking for a good wrap in Athens. I wonder if there are more than ten decent souvlaki restaurants in Athens.
Nicaragua, which opened in early summer in Piraeus, enriches this shrinking list. I wanted to write a long time ago about this shop co-created by Babis Papathanasiou and Christos Bitsonis, two friends who love old-school souvlaki. So, they considered setting up a project they would initially do themselves. This is evident from the meticulousness with which they choose their ingredients: the meat comes from Livadia, the pies from a workshop in Peristeri, the soutzouki from Avakian in the Politis stoa, the vegetables from the neighbourhood markets and so on...
They do an outstanding job of baking. They also make a beautiful crispy tomato sauce that dresses the pita with pork, burgers, soutzouki, or chicken. Don`t even ask for fries for fun since they`ve almost legislated it with an eleventh commandment emblazoned on Nicaragua`s face card: "Thou shalt not put potatoes on the kebab!"
