Just a few steps from Pangrati Grove, the neighbourhood’s latest arrival is devoted to the art of dolce far niente and a fine selection of spritzes.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Athens’ bar scene is undergoing one of its most meaningful shifts of the past decade. Aperitivo culture and the rapid rise of spritzerias are no longer simply passing trends. Together, they are reshaping the rhythm of the city and encouraging people to go out earlier. The growing demand for after-work drinks, combined with a noticeable turn towards lower-alcohol options built around vermouth, amari and bitters, has prompted a wave of new concepts across the city’s neighbourhoods. It is an intelligent, approachable and relatively affordable formula, one that embraces simplicity without compromising on quality. Within this increasingly dynamic landscape, Magdalena stands out. This carefully considered and aesthetically accomplished new arrival in Pangrati succeeds in bringing a genuine sense of Italian aperitivo culture to the heart of Athens.

Decorated with understated flair in deep green tones and black accents, the space effortlessly evokes the warmth of an authentic neighbourhood bar. Dionisis Polatos has devised a drinks list divided into four clearly defined sections. The first features five lightly sparkling cocktails on tap, among which the Sicilian Fizz and the particularly refreshing Mediterranean Gin & Tonic stand out.

The real interest, however, lies in the second section, devoted to Aperitivo Suggestions. Here, the classic expressions of the Milano-Torino family, including the Negroni, Americano and Sbagliato, are executed with impressive precision and a clear respect for the balance between bitters and vermouth.

The bottled cocktails also deserve particular mention. The Coffee Negroni and Peach Old Fashioned show how pre-batching, when handled properly, can deliver consistency, depth and clarity in the glass. The list is completed by a sharply focused selection of nine Italian wines, alongside grappa and limoncello.

Naturally, the ritual of aperitivo calls for the right food pairing. At Magdalena, drinks are accompanied by excellent Italian cheeses and cured meats, sliced to order at the open bar. Tuscan pecorino with figs, authentic Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma and Bologna mortadella with whole pistachios form platters that stand confidently alongside the acidity and bubbles of the spritzes, reinforcing the idea that here, one drinks in order to savour.

Among the many new arrivals in Athens, Magdalena is one that genuinely caught our attention. It takes a widespread trend and gives it a more premium character, proving that after-work drinking in Athens is not merely fashionable, but something the city’s residents have truly embraced.
