Bungalow 7: A Brunch Experience by Dinos Foteinakis

I won`t hide the fact that Dinos is a very good friend of mine and one of my favourite chefs, but believe me, this doesn`t bias me at all when it comes to his cooking.

His cooking is always technically flawless; however, its main characteristic is its deliciousness. Dinos cooks for his customers at his restaurants in the same way he cooks at home for his friends—with love, enthusiasm, and passion. This is always reflected in his dishes, whether they are comfort or gastronomic.

So, when he began serving his Sunday brunch at Bungalow 7 in Glyfada, which is his base this year, it was only natural for us to rush over. The place is designed for morning gatherings, especially on sunny days, even now in winter, thanks to the large windows overlooking the sea, the comfortable sofas where you can relax before or after your meal to read your newspaper or book, the large tables that are placed at a distance that allows groups to chat and laugh without disturbing others, and the music that creates an atmosphere without being intrusive.

As soon as we were seated, a waitress appeared with a bar trolley to offer to make us one of the signature cocktails from the menu right on the spot: a Bellini  made with sparkling wine, peach, and chocolate; a Bloody Mary with vodka, tomato, mustard, and kimchi; and an Espresso Martini with vodka, coffee, and salted caramel. Luckily, there were six of us, so we tried them all, and they were excellent.

The menu isn`t extensive, but it has everything needed to meet my—at least—requirements. There are eggs in various preparations, sandwiches, some luxurious ingredients like caviar and lobster, and a variety of viennoiseries, complemented by a huge buffet of amazing desserts.

We ordered nearly everything on the menu, but there are some must-tries that you simply can`t miss when you visit—and trust me, you definitely should! Among these are the Montecristo sandwich (photo above left) on ciabatta bread, featuring smoked ribeye ham, melted cheese, fried egg and baby gem lettuce. You won`t want to miss the poached eggs with lobster, sabayon, caviar and watercress; the hot dog with black pig sausage, spicy mustard and chili-onion jam, which caused great excitement at the table; and the beef sandwich with pulled beef, egg salad and cabbage, an indulgent and decadently sinful treat. And, of course, the carrot cake—arguably the best in town, moist and perfectly sweet, topped with impeccable frosting—along with one of the lightest and most elegant lemon tarts you will ever have.

To be perfectly fair, I wish the fries were crispier and the croissants were made in-house instead of being store-bought, but these are the only flaws I found in an otherwise excellent menu that I will happily return to try again and again.

Add to all this the great value for money and the beautiful crowd that the place attracts, and you`ll see why Bungalow 7`s Sunday brunch is destined to become a favourite winter ritual.

You arrive around 3 o`clock, eat, drink, catch up with friends, and have a fantastic time. By 8, you`re back home, ready to relax on the couch and watch your favourite shows—or The Voice. Can you think of anything better?
