Blue Brick: The Architecture of Fine Drinking Redefines the Night on Dragatsaniou Street

On the street that has become the city centre’s hottest new arrival, the team behind Dr. 8 has created a Berlin-style industrial universe, where light, steel and alcohol come together in a rare drinking experience.

Athens has a unique ability to suddenly rediscover its forgotten streets, transforming them into lively pockets of nightlife in a matter of weeks. Dragatsaniou Street, just off Klafthmonos Square, is the latest example of this urban shift. It is here that Blue Brick has arrived as the undisputed protagonist, bearing the signature of the experienced team behind Dr. 8 and bringing a touch of metropolitan Berlin to the city centre.

This is not simply another café-bar, but a multifaceted space that sets out to break with convention, hence its motto, “break the brick”. The blue glass brick is used as both a structural and aesthetic element, shifting the energy of the space as daylight gives way to the neon glow of night.

Although the day begins in the calm rhythm of good coffee and smoothies inspired by iconic museums, such as the Guggenheim and the Pompidou, the real reveal comes when the music turns up and the bar passes into the hands of Ektoras Vezyrgiannis and his team. The philosophy behind the cocktail menu is a clever one: a tribute to the architects who shaped modern aesthetics.

I focused my attention on the Gaudi Colada, a creation that moves well beyond the usual tropical clichés. The combination of rum with beurre noisette, or browned butter, brings a deep, almost earthy richness, masterfully balanced by the freshness of pineapple, banana and coconut. The addition of bubbles at the end gives the drink an unexpected lightness, making it feel like a flavour “construction” suspended somewhere between the classic and the modern. Equally impressive is the Foster Bubbles, where gin meets green apple and apricot. It is a cocktail that “breathes”, clean and aromatic, with the bubbles underlining every botanical note of the spirit.

A special mention should go to “our own” Pikionis, an Americano-style serve that brings together Campari and vermouth with pomegranate and peach. For those looking for intensity without necessarily wanting alcohol, the Hadid Passion and Ando Spritz offer a high-end experience too, as they are also served in 0% versions, while preserving their flavour profile intact.

Of course, the Blue Brick experience would not be complete without the right culinary “structure” to match. The small plates here follow the same artistic logic. The Soumaya tacos, with spicy minced meat and avocado cream, make for an ideal introduction, while the Ziller potato dauphinoise sticks with truffle mayonnaise are the ultimate bar snack. For something bolder, the Moma, with breaded crab in mini buns and strawberry mayonnaise, offers a pop-like contrast of flavours that sits perfectly within the industrial atmosphere.

As the hours pass and the DJ sets take bolder turns, often with unexpected Greek retro additions, Blue Brick confirms Dragatsaniou Street’s status as the city centre’s new point of reference. It is a place where the architecture of flavour meets the spontaneity of the Athenian night, creating an experience that, much like the glass brick on its wall, shifts in appearance and character, inviting you to return again and again. And, by the looks of it, people are doing exactly that. Since opening a few months ago, Blue Brick has been full every day, from morning until night.
